Style/Lineage

So often in yoga, we focus on the asanas, but the practice is so much more. Internationally renowned yoga teacher, Kino MacGregor has rigorously designed this course to include every aspect of yoga. Drawing upon her academic background and her classical yoga training, Kino has created a one-year educational course that seeks to bring the rigor of a university setting to the study of yoga. She has brought together some of the best teachers on the planet to share their expertise with you. Instead of a “teacher training” simply stamping graduates with credentials, Yogaversity presents yoga as a path of personal development.
Additional Information
To ensure successful completion within a year, we recommend dedicating approximately 5 hours per week to the program. This commitment encompasses a blend of pre-recorded videos and live sessions. In case you are unable to attend a live session, recordings will be made available on Zoom. Additionally, the program is designed with occasional slower weeks to provide you with the flexibility to catch up on any missed content.

Core competencies

By the end of this program, graduates will be able to…

Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Describe the key muscles that move or stabilize each major joint (shoulder, spine, hip, knee, elbow, wrist, ankle) by describing their role in moving the body in asana correctly.
  • Apply key anatomical contraindications and misalignments to each asana taught in this program by accurately describing the physiological or structural factors at risk or impacted by the posture or movement.
  • Identify the most common injuries and physical restrictions encountered in yoga practice— including their typical causes, affected structures, and the movement patterns most likely to produce them
  • Apply knowledge of kinetic chains and biomechanics to introduce targeted pose modifications that address specific injuries, chronic issues, or accessibility challenges without compromising the class experience
Yoga History & Theory
  • Compare the yoga sutra, bhagavad gita, hatha yoga pradipika, and upanishads by comparing and contrasting their contributions to yoga history as well as our modern practice.
  • Describe the eight limbs of ashtanga yoga (yamas, niyamas, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, samadhi) and the practical intention behind each
  • Apply the philosophical framework of the yoga sutras to explain the method and purpose of contemporary ashtanga vinyasa yoga practice to a student audience
  • Discuss the origins of yoga and the primary styles and paths of yoga (e.g., jnana, bhakti, karma, raja) as distinct approaches to the same ultimate aim
  • Discuss the bhagavad gītā's key philosophical concepts—karma, brahman (supreme consciousness), ātma (soul), and prakṛti (material nature)— and the role each plays in the text's teachings
  • Apply the bhagavad gītā's yoga techniques for achieving clarity and purpose— addressing the root of confusion and its resolution through practice—in the context of a personal or teaching challenge
Practice Skills
  • Practice intermediate yoga postures from the curriculum with good alignment, risk mitigation, appropriate adaptations, and using props safely and effectively.
  • Practice restorative and yin yoga to sequence to address a specific therapeutic intention such as hip opening, spinal decompression, or nervous system down-regulation
  • Identify the primary groups of asana movement patterns (e.g., forward folds, backbends, twists, inversions, hip openers) and the general mechanical principles governing each
  • Describe how the integration of guided practice with applied philosophy discussion deepens understanding of the ashtanga method's purpose and lineage
  • Apply daily meditation practice principles—including sadhana sati— to establish and maintain a personal meditation practice with consistent technique and intentionality
Business Skills
  • Describe your 1-year business plan post teaching certification including achievable professional goals for 1, 3, 6, and 12 months.
  • Identify the core elements of a yoga niche business— including the four ps of marketing, platform development, and the distinction between a yoga business and general small business models
Teaching Skills
  • Apply creative movement sequencing principles to design a drill sequence that targets a specific movement pattern, incorporating props where appropriate to support accessibility
  • Apply an understanding of teacher accountability and ethical conduct to examine real-world challenges faced by modern yoga teachers with integrity and self-awareness
  • Identify the physiological impact of trauma on the brain and nervous system including the distinction between 'little t' and 'big t' traumas and their effect on nervous system regulation
  • Apply pose-specific modifications and prop adaptations to design ashtanga class formats that serve students with varying experience levels, physical limitations, or special needs
  • Create and teach a complete, original yoga class sequence featuring a clear intro/body/conclusion structure, demonstrating mastery of at least one sequencing approach and intentional breath-movement integration
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Identify the definition of cultural appropriation and distinguish it from cultural appreciation and exchange with specific reference to yoga's south asian origins and its spread through western cultures

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.

Program Emphasis

Evaluation methods

Program evaluations
  • Written exam
  • Special project

There will be tests, homework assignments and projects that you will be required to complete and pass upon completion. This course is not a teacher training factory. You will not be rubber stamped as a teacher at the end of the course. Only years of personal practice and teaching can really develop you into a teacher.
