Style/Lineage

Baptiste Yoga was developed in the 1990s by Baron Baptiste, a second-generation yoga teacher influenced by his parents’ teachings as well as the foundations of Ashtanga, Iyengar, and Bikram yoga. His unique synthesis became a powerful, practical methodology known as Baptiste power vinyasa yoga. While rooted in classical yoga principles, Baptiste yoga stands out for its focus on accessibility, self-empowerment, and transformation. The style is less concerned with rigid alignment and more focused on moving with purpose, breath, and presence.

Core competencies

By the end of this program, graduates will be able to…

Yoga History & Theory
  • Describe how they would apply the philosophical concepts of sthira and sukha strategically into their practice and teaching to appropriately support physical balanced action in any pose.
Practice Skills
  • Deepen and improve your practice of the 53 postures from the "journey into power" sequence and build on your level 1 skills through biomechanical skillbuilding sessions, informative partner work, and hands-on experiential feedback.
  • Describe the impact of cultivating a consistent personal meditation practice through the course of the program and its impact on your daily life.
  • Practice basic meditation techniques (including observation, sensory meditation, and body scans) with an intentional physical foundation and building a comfortable seat (with props if needed) to create a seat free from distraction.
  • Practice ujjayi pranayama effectively as its own practice as well as in the flow of the class with good mechanics, including appropriate volume, consistency, rhythm and sound.
Teaching Skills
  • Guide a pose with the principles of "true north alignment" by cuing the foundation accurately, teaching the form of the pose, organizing the body effectively relative to the midline (tadasana blueprint), teaching functional joint alignment, and addressing common misalignments.
  • Incorporate the five elements (ground down like like earth, flow like water, build an inner fire, soften like air, and create space for something new) into your teaching by applying each to an appropriate posture and using evocative language to support the energetic experience of the posture or transition.
  • Teach to the intention of each of the 11 sections of the "journey into power sequence" effectively through your use of language, incorporation of the five elements, body language and energy, and vocal tone and projection.
  • Adapt and scale postures in an all-levels class effectively while teaching to meet both the collective as well as individual needs in the room.
  • Lead an-all levels baptiste "journey into power" sequence of 53 postures to a group of students teaching easefully from memory and adapting the sequence for different time frames (45, 60, 75, or 90 minutes).
  • Incorporate the seven bandhas seamlessly into your teaching including position, how to activate, and describing their physical and subtle purpose.
  • Integrate the philosophical concepts of sthira and sukha into your teaching thematically by relating them both to physical postures as well as life off the mat when appropriate moments arise.
  • Integrate the "five organizing principles of true north alignment" into your teaching with full expression by 1. building the foundation and being up to something bigger than yourself, 2. sthira sukha (balanced action of ease and effort), 3. integrating the five pillars (gaze, ujjayi, bandhas, tapas, vinyasa), 4. integration (organizing the body and bringing the extremities into midline and core), and 5. full expression.
  • Demonstrate self-mastery and empowerment in all areas of teaching by teaching without a "mask" (breaking free from self-limitations), with full and open expression (with expressive voice and body language), and connecting immediately and responsively to the students.
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Exemplify stepping into your empowerment as a leader by communicating clearly and powerfully, demonstrating confidence through your physical presence and voice, responding organically and immediately to the needs of the moment and embodying the "baptiste yoga" principles.
  • Describe how the principle of "being up to something bigger than yourself" has become part of your way of being and how you are currently using your leadership skills to serve and empower your community.
  • Exemplify and describe how living the "three themes" of baptiste yoga (what's most important to you, letting go of distractions, and commitment) is manifesting and expressing in your teaching, your life, and your leadership.
  • Describe how - with the support of the baptiste network - they are stepping into leadership to cultivate more connection within their own local community.
  • Describe your journey of personal growth including how you overcome and transcended self-limiting beliefs and personal fears.

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.

Program Emphasis

Evaluation methods

Program evaluations

In group work, practitioners must demonstrate their understanding of True North Alignment and the 5 Organizing Principles while teaching real time. Practitioners are evaluated on their ability to lead the sequence effectively, apply the principles and facilitate the group in front of the leadership team who provides clear, constructive feedback.
