Teaching Skills
|

Drawing inspiration from a wide variety of class styles (tantrik hatha yoga, vinyasa flow, ashtanga, restorative, yoga nidra, acroyoga, pranayama, meditation, etc.), students will design a themed class (15, 45, 60, or 75 minutes) that follows the blueprint of the prana vayus, incorporates postures aligned with the physical and energetic intention of the class, appropriately addresses the nervous system, and effectively applies ayurvedic principles for a beneficial result.

Teach a 75 minute tantrik hatha yoga class based on an assigned theme incorporting the theme attributes, staying on time, moving through the room with purpose, using your voice and body expressively, connecting with students and acting responsively to student needs.

Teach pranayama (including sama vritti, ujjayi, dirga, brahmari, sitali, chandra and surya bhedana) with appropriate vocal tone, good pacing, and effective technique.

Teach meditation (including the on breath, golden egg, witnessing thoughts, on light, chakras, mantra, antahkarana, and prana vayu meditations) with appropriate vocal tone, good pacing, and effective technique.

Teach at least one of the sat kriyas (kapalabhati, nadi shodhana, trataka, nauli, agni sara) to a small group of peers with appropriate vocal tone, good pacing, clarity in instruction and effective technique.

Effectively sequence asana, pranayama, and meditation into a themed class plan, sequencing from gross to subtle and ordering all class elements effectively to create well-being according to the class intention (healing, energy, nervous system regulation, etc.).

Teach a yoga posture from the curriculum safely by building from the ground up, cuing to beneficial alignment, adapting the pose for different body types and abilities, and using all cuing tools (audio, visual and hands on) to help students find the "seat" of the pose.

Demonstrate appropriate and safe hands on assists asking permission, using approrpiate pressure and technique, and using an assist that supports the student's unique and immediate needs.

Describe how you would adapt a group class experience to accommodate special populations (injuries, prenatal, etc.) by communicating with the student about their needs and offering safe and common sense adaptations within their scope of practice.

Teach deep rest practices effectively (basic yoga nidra, restorative postures and guided savasana) with appropriate tone of voice, pacing, use of props, and effective technique.
