Purpose

The Level 1 program invites individuals into the Holy Yoga community to receive expert yoga training as well as Christ-centered spiritual development. Created with flexibility and convenience in mind

What to expect

Required Reading:

Four books are required for your training, and they are to be purchased separately:

Holy Yoga: Exercise for the Christian Body and Soul by Brooke Boon. This will
serve as your manual in addition to Hatha Yoga Illustrated.

Hatha Yoga Illustrated by Brooke Boon and Martin Kirk will serve as your instructional
and photographic manual.

Eat This Book by Eugene Peterson. This nine-chapter book outlines the importance of
the Word and meditation. It will accompany our training week-by-week and teach you
how to immerse yourself in the discipline of biblical meditation.

Experiential Worship: Encountering God with Heart, Soul, Mind, and Strength by
Bob Rognlien needs to be read during the course, but there is no suggested timeline.

Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Identify the primary respiratory structures involved in yogic breathing including the diaphragm, intercostals, and accessory muscles.
  • Explain the physiological process of diaphragmatic breathing and how breath quality reflects and regulates the nervous system.
  • Identify holy yoga's core alignment directives including skull draw, shoulder draw, four corners of the feet, and bandha engagement.
  • Explain how nervous system responses to trauma manifest in the body and how yoga practice can support or dysregulate those responses.
Business Skills
  • Explain the essential elements of professional practice including liability insurance, waivers, continuing education, and branding.
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Explain the ethical responsibilities of a holy yoga instructor regarding touch, student relationships, and professional conduct.
  • Identify the professional scope of practice for a certified yoga instructor and its boundaries from medical or therapeutic intervention.
Practice Skills
  • Explain how the four pillars shape the identity and purpose of a holy yoga instructor.
  • Demonstrate the ability to select and interpret a scripture passage using multiple translations for different audiences.
  • Identify he five-step weaving the word method used to integrate scripture into holy yoga class delivery.
  • Explain the theological basis for meditation in holy yoga including cohabitation with christ, surrender, and renewal of the mind.
  • Apply bandha engagement, mudra placement, and drishti instruction accurately within asana and pranayama practice.
  • Identify the structural components of each holy yoga flow format from warm-up through final relaxation.
Teaching Skills
  • Apply a contemplative practice to facilitate a guided student meditation experience anchored in scripture.
  • Demonstrate the ability to cue students through the full yogic breath cycle connecting breath to spinal and pelvic rhythm.
  • Demonstrate accurate execution and cueing of poses within each family including appropriate variations and modifications.
  • Apply appropriate prop suggestions and verbal modifications in real time to accommodate varying experience and limitations.
  • Design a fully modified version of a complete class sequence maintaining spiritual and physical integrity for a specific accessibility need.
  • Identify the key elements of effective yoga instruction including voice, body language, room management, and pacing.
Yoga History & Theory
  • Discuss the theological foundation of holy yoga and its mission of carrying the gospel through yoga practice.
  • Describe patanjali's eight limbs of yoga and the classical branches relevant to holy yoga practice.
  • Explain the yamas and niyamas as ethical observances and their parallel expression in christian discipleship.
  • Demonstrate the ability to contextualize classical yoga philosophy within a christ-centered framework during teaching.
  • Discuss the three primary bandhas, the major mudras and the concept of drishti as taught in holy yoga.

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.
