Purpose

The purpose of the Neuroscience and Yoga Conference is to help yoga students and teachers understand the science of yoga so they can improve how they practice, teach, and advocate for yoga.

What to expect

Participants can expect expert-led presentations from researchers, MDs, and PhDs sharing current scientific insights on yoga and neuroscience. The conference also includes yoga classes with experienced teachers, along with live Q&A sessions and discussion opportunities. Content is designed to be practical, accessible, and applicable to teaching and personal practice.

Style/Lineage

The Neuroscience and Yoga Conference reflects a multidisciplinary approach to yoga that honors multiple styles and teaching traditions. Faculty presenters represent a range of styles, including Dharma Yoga, Srini Yoga, and other classical and contemporary traditions, as well as therapeutic and clinically informed yoga practices.

The conference explores how yoga intersects with modern neuroscience. Sessions draw from both traditional yoga teachings and current research to support practical, adaptable applications of yoga.

Core competencies

By the end of this program, graduates will be able to…

Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Discuss the scientific foundations supporting the integration of yoga into educational, healthcare, and community-based settings. accurately referencing relevant research concepts and contextual factors while communicating in a manner appropriate for interdisciplinary audience
  • Demonstrate accurate evidence-based yoga protocols relevant to a range of health conditions using principles of neuroscience, anatomy, and physiology, by describing protocol components, intended outcomes, and supporting scientific rationale appropriate to a continuing education level.
  • Describe core elements of yoga practice and how they may be adapted to support individualized or population-specific needs, by clearly explain adaptation options using appropriate terminology, while acknowledging variability, limitations, and scope-of-practice considerations.
  • Identify key features of neuroscience and health-related research relevant to yoga practice and teaching, correctly citing study purpose, basic methodology, and stated conclusions, and recognize limitations or potential sources of bias.
  • Describe current neuroscience-informed research related to migraine and headache disorders and their relevance to yoga-based approaches, accurately summarize key themes from the literature, including proposed mechanisms, limitations of evidence, and appropriate non-clinical applications.
  • Explain considerations for adapting yoga practices for individuals experiencing migraine or headache conditions. clearly describing adaptations using neuroscience and physiological principles while acknowledging variability in symptoms, triggers, and scope-of-practice boundaries.
  • Discuss neuroscience-informed perspectives on neurodiversity, including adhd and autism, and their relevance to yoga programming in educational settings. demonstrating an understanding of inclusive, strengths-based language and developmental considerations when discussing adhd, autistic children, and other neurodivergent learners.
  • Discuss considerations for adapting yoga practices to support neurodivergent children, including those with adhd and autism, in school or community environments, correctly identify sensory, attentional, and communication factors that may influence participation while recognizing ethical boundaries and institutional constraints.
  • Describe neuroscience research related to brain health, aging, and longevity, including factors associated with cognitive resilience across the lifespan, accurately summarizing key concepts from the literature and describe general mechanisms discussed without overstating causality or clinical outcomes.
  • Explain how yoga-related practices may support brain health and healthy aging within a lifestyle and wellness context, clearly describing evidence-informed connections between yoga practices and brain health while acknowledging individual variability and limitations of current research.
  • List opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and continued professional development within the fields of yoga, neuroscience, and healthcare. providing relevant examples that reflect an understanding of professional roles, ethical considerations, and pathways for ongoing learning or collaboration.

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.
