Purpose
The program trains knowledgeable, ethical yoga teachers through an integrative approach that honors classical yoga, emphasizes safe functional movement, and supports personal growth, self-awareness, and service.
What to expect
Students can expect a well-structured, experiential training that blends study, practice, and personal integration. The program includes recorded lectures, live sessions, guided practices, readings, written assignments, quizzes, and practical teaching experiences, allowing students to learn through multiple modalities and at an appropriate pace.
Major topics include asana practice and teaching methodology, with an emphasis on safe alignment, intelligent sequencing, and functional movement for diverse bodies; anatomy and physiology, focused on practical application, injury prevention, and longevity; and breathwork and meditation, exploring pranayama, mindfulness, and nervous-system awareness.
Students study yogic philosophy and history, including the Eight Limbs of Yoga, the Yoga Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita, and ethical foundations through the Yamas and Niyamas. The program also explores energetic awareness, mantra, and subtle body concepts as supportive tools for personal practice and teaching.
Throughout the training, students engage in self-study (svadhyaya), reflective journaling, and mentor feedback. Teaching practicums and demonstrations support the development of confidence, professionalism, and an authentic teaching voice. The program emphasizes integration over memorization, encouraging students to embody yoga as a living practice applicable both on and off the mat.
Style/Lineage
The Mindful Purpose Institute (MPI) yoga training programs are rooted in classical yogic traditions while integrating modern anatomy, therapeutic awareness, and contemporary teaching methodology. MPI views yoga as a holistic way of life, extending beyond physical postures into ethics, mindfulness, breath, and self-realization.
The foundational style of MPI is integrative Hatha Yoga, informed by the principles of Raja Yoga and the Eight Limbs, with supportive elements of Bhakti Yoga (devotion, mantra, service) and Jnana Yoga (self-inquiry and philosophical study). Rather than following a single rigid system, MPI weaves together respected lineages and lived teachings to offer a balanced, accessible, and authentic expression of yoga.
Primary influences include the Sivananda Yoga tradition, emphasizing classical structure, service, and integration of body, breath, and mind; the teachings and lineage of Dharma Mittra, highlighting compassion, devotion, and humility in practice; and the life and teachings of Tao Porchon-Lynch, inspiring inclusivity, joy, longevity, and yoga lived off the mat.
MPI is also strongly informed by the Kaivalya Yoga Method, which emphasizes intelligent sequencing, functional movement, nervous-system awareness, and the integration of classical philosophy with contemporary anatomy and biomechanics. This influence supports safe, sustainable practice and empowers teachers to adapt yoga for diverse bodies and life stages. Additional inspiration comes from Bhakti traditions associated with Krishna Das and Ram Dass, emphasizing mantra, devotion, and service.
MPI’s teaching style is non-dogmatic, inclusive, and student-centered, viewing lineage as a living transmission—passed through study, practice, mentorship, and service—guiding students to honor tradition while developing an authentic teaching voice rooted in integrity, awareness, and compassion.

Program evaluations
Proficiency is evaluated through two multiple-choice assessments and one submitted video, focusing on foundational anatomical knowledge and movement terms as they relate to yoga practice. • Written assessments require a 75% passing score, with the opportunity to retake quizzes as needed to support learning and mastery. • In the submitted video, students demonstrate and explain movement terms using a provided list, enabling embodied integration of anatomical concepts.
