Bhagavad Gita Book Club
Read the Bhagavad Gita in a structured, supportive community while learning how its philosophical dialogue applies to everyday life.
Who this is for
This book club is for yoga practitioners, yoga teachers, and spiritual seekers who want to read the Bhagavad Gita in a thoughtful, community-based setting. It’s suitable for those who are new to the text as well as those who have read it before and would like to deepen their understanding. Participants should be interested in discussing the Gita’s ideas and reflecting on how its teachings relate to contemporary life and personal practice.
Benefits
Students will gain a clearer understanding of the structure, themes, and philosophical dialogue of the Bhagavad Gita. The group format provides accountability to stay engaged with the text, guidance for navigating its ideas, and space to reflect on how its teachings connect to daily life and yoga practice. Participants also benefit from hearing multiple perspectives and comparing interpretations across translations and commentaries.
What to expect
Bhagavad Gita Book Club is a bi-weekly, community-based study group designed to support participants in reading and reflecting on the Bhagavad Gita over time. The group meets for one hour every other Sunday at 11:00 a.m. ET and explores the entire text over the course of twenty sessions.
Participants receive a reading assignment and a set of discussion topics before each meeting. These prompts help readers prepare for the conversation and encourage thoughtful engagement with the text.
The primary companion text for the group is Hari-kirtana das’s book Journey Into the Bhagavad Gita, which provides a clear overview of the Gita’s structure, themes, and philosophical ideas. Participants are strongly encouraged to have a copy of this book and read the relevant sections alongside the Gita itself. (A description of Journey Into the Bhagavad Gita can be found on Amazon.) Those using other translations of the Bhagavad Gita are also welcome to participate.
Each session typically includes:
• A brief opening reflection to frame the chapter being discussed
• Guided conversation about the assigned verses and themes
• Small-group discussions nested within the larger group dialogue
• Opportunities to compare translations and commentaries
• Reflection on how the Gita’s philosophical ideas apply to everyday life and spiritual practice
Special attention is given to helping participants follow the Gita’s dialogue and understand how its ideas unfold across chapters. Discussions also explore how the Gita integrates faith and reason within its philosophical framework.
Because the group is limited to 30 participants, everyone has the opportunity to contribute to the conversation and learn from the reflections of others. The format encourages thoughtful discussion, respectful inquiry, and the sharing of insights about how the Gita’s teachings connect to lived experience.
The Book Club is offered on a donation basis, with a recommended contribution of $15 per meeting.
