Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Describe the location and role of connective tissue and fascia by identifying relevant anatomical structures and explaining how yoga practices may support healthy movement and function.
  • Explain how the nervous system functions in relation to yoga practice by describing basic nervous-system responses and identifying ways yoga practices may support regulation and overall well-being.
  • Explain the use of yoga props and equipment effectively by identifying appropriate props, explaining their purpose, and demonstrating how to use them to support alignment, accessibility, stability, or engagement in practice.
  • Apply knowledge of range of motion and anatomical variation when teaching diverse populations by recognizing individual differences and adapting movement, alignment, and modifications to support safe and appropriate practice.
Business Skills
  • Develop a clear purpose and professional vision for teaching yoga by identifying personal motivations, values, and goals and connecting them to a meaningful teaching direction.
  • Develop a continuing-education plan for ongoing professional growth by identifying areas of interest or passion and establishing specific goals for further study and skill development.
  • Develop a future-focused business model for a yoga teaching practice by defining a desired professional direction and identifying actionable strategies for achieving long-term goals.

  • Apply yoga principles to daily life by identifying ways personal choices, behaviors, and relationships reflect the values and teachings shared through yoga instruction.
  • Explain the stories and traditional origins associated with yoga poses by identifying relevant narratives, explaining their connection to the poses, and describing appropriate ways to incorporate them into class themes.
Practice Skills
  • Practice and demonstrate mudras by identifying common mudras, explaining their traditional purpose and application, and incorporating appropriate mudras into personal practice or teaching.
  • Perform advanced pranayama techniques drawn from traditional yoga teachings by demonstrating appropriate technique, pacing, preparation, and safety considerations for advanced practitioners.
  • Practice and guide Yoga Nidra by describing its purpose and structure, demonstrating appropriate facilitation techniques, and incorporating practices that support relaxation and awareness.
Teaching Skills
  • Develop advanced yoga sequences that prepare students for complex asanas by organizing progressive preparation, appropriate transitions, modifications, peak-pose development, and integration.
  • Adapt yoga cues for different learning styles and populations by using varied verbal, visual, and experiential instructions that support clarity, accessibility, and individual needs.
Yoga History & Theory
  • Compare different yoga traditions and lineages by identifying their distinct practices and philosophical perspectives, examining similarities and differences, and considering how they relate to one’s own teaching approach and areas for further study.
  • Develop a personal sankalpa and framework for incorporating sankalpa into teaching by explaining its purpose, formulating an intentional personal statement, and identifying appropriate ways to introduce the practice in yoga classes.

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.
