Core competencies

By the end of this program, graduates will be able to…

Teaching Skills
  • Examine a sample set of yoga cues to identify the use of position language, paired actions, stabilizing cues, and potential crutch words or passive phrasing.
  • Lead a class segment that demonstrates strong teacher presence by moving through the space, observing students, and delivering  effective verbal assists.
  • Set up and facilitate a yoga class environment that demonstrates skillful use of props, appropriate music or silence, and attentive observation of students.
  • Set up and deliver a short online yoga class segment that demonstrates best practices for camera positioning, vocal delivery, and student engagement.
Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Design a class that prioritizes joint integrity and connective tissue health by incorporating stabilizing cues and appropriate load progression.
  • Examine how proprioception and interoception work together to help students refine alignment, deepen body awareness, and prevent injury.
  • Examine the common injury patterns associated with the hip, knee, shoulder, and wrist in yoga and connect them to specific movement habits or cuing gaps.
  • Assess the breath cuing in a yoga class for accuracy, effectiveness, and alignment with the physiological and energetic demands of each pose.
Practice Skills
  • Examine common yoga poses to identify the key alignment risks, functional goals, and the range of appropriate expressions across different body types.
  • Create a full yoga class sequence—including component parts, transitions, and integration—for a specific peak pose of your choosing.
  • Adapt a Vinyasa-style class sequence into a Hatha format—and vice versa—by making intentional changes to tempo, transitions, and instruction style.
  • Examine how different meditation styles—including open awareness and object-based meditation—affect the mind and suit different student needs.
  • Explain how hormonal shifts, circulatory changes, and physical adaptations during pregnancy require specific modifications to standard yoga poses.
  • Identify the three Ayurvedic doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—and describe the basic qualities, characteristics, and common imbalances of each.
Yoga History & Theory
  • Identify the major ages of yoga history—from the Indus Valley and Vedic periods through the Tantrik, Hatha, and Modern Ages—and their key contributions.
  • Apply a selected sutra as the thematic foundation of a yoga class, connecting its teaching to the physical and contemplative elements of the practice.
  • Design a discussion activity or reflection exercise that draws on the Bhagavad Gita to help students clarify their own teaching mission.
  • Explain how the subtle body framework—including the koshas, vayus, and chakra system—informs the design and intention of a yoga class.
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Examine how systemic inequities—such as those related to race, gender, ability, and class—show up in yoga spaces and what a teacher can do.
  • Explain how the yamas and niyamas function as a practical ethical and lifestyle framework that extends beyond the mat into daily decisions, relationships, and professional conduct.
  • Explain how a trauma-informed approach reshapes cuing language, hands-on assists, sequencing decisions, and the overall atmosphere of a yoga class.
Business Skills
  • Explain how a yoga teacher's personal mission, teaching style, and target audience shape their approach to marketing and professional development.
  • Explain how clarity about your ideal student—their goals, challenges, and language—shapes every aspect of your marketing, offerings, and professional communication.
  • Explain how diversifying income beyond a single teaching format creates financial resilience and allows a yoga teacher to grow their impact over a sustained career.
