Purpose

The practice gradually opens the body's subtle energy channels and prepares students for profound awareness during an extended guided Shavasana or Yoga Nidra.

What to expect

During class, students may experience:

Gentle hands-on assists and massage

A calming, candlelit atmosphere

Delightful scents

Beautiful music in the background

Be prepared to make your students feel like they've just stepped out of a spa. 🌸

Style/Lineage

SPA Yoga® is a 75-minute, slow-flow, floor-based, whole-body sensory experience rooted in Fluid Yoga sequencing. By engaging all five senses with soft candlelight, soothing music, aromatherapy, hands-on assists, and a renewed awareness of taste (sometimes chocolate!), SPA Yoga® helps practitioners access deep relaxation and inner wisdom.

Additional Information

Core competencies

By the end of this program, graduates will be able to…

Practice Skills
  • Practice reciting the Medicine Buddha mantra with clear pronunciation and a steady rhythm, sustaining focus throughout the recitation.
  • Practice the baseline slow-flow sequence with steady breath and mindful transitions, holding each pose for the intended number of breaths with ease.
  • Practice alternate nostril breathing and grounding breath with proper technique and pacing, sustaining a smooth, even rhythm throughout.
Teaching Skills
  • Apply sensory elements when preparing and leading a class, introducing scent, sound, light, touch, and taste at moments that match the intended element.
  • Create an original floor-based slow-flow sequence that follows the elemental pyramid, showing logical progression, balanced time per phase, and a grounded closing.
  • Differentiate student bodies and experiences to offer a SPA Yoga class, selecting assists and massages that suit each phase of the sequence while honoring student consent.
  • Apply a chosen theme throughout a class, weaving it into the opening, the physical practice, and the closing blessing with clear, consistent language.
  • Lead a guide meditation for an extended shavasana, sequencing imagery and body awareness so students move smoothly into stillness and return gently.
  • Identify each point of the Vairocana meditation posture, naming the alignment of the back, legs, hands, chin, eyes, tongue, and lips accurately.
  • Construct an original yoga nidra script that follows the traditional stages, integrating a resolve, a rotation of consciousness, and a visualization coherently.
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Explain why a sankalpa should be simple, positive, and repeated consistently, describing how it is meant to shape choices and conduct over time.
Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Explain how each spinal movement affects the body, describing why a balanced practice moves the spine in every direction.
  • Apply the elements-and-senses framework when guiding awareness in practice, directing attention to the sense that corresponds to each element accurately.
  • Differentiate between awareness of the physical body and awareness of the subtle body, examining how the shift is cultivated during yoga nidra.

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.
