Purpose

This training combinesdynamic vinyasa with precise alignmentto offer a comprehensive and embodied experience. Whether you’re looking to deepen your personal yoga journey or become a certified teacher, this program will provide the tools to do both.

TheRefined Flow approachemphasizes proper alignment of asanas (postures), meditation, and pranayama, along with in-depth studies in anatomy and physiology as they relate to yoga. Students will also explore yoga philosophy, teaching techniques, and the business of yoga.

What to expect

THIS TRAINING WILL EXPLORE:
  • Physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of asana, pranayama, andmeditation

  • Over 108 asana fully explained, including Sanskrit names, and exploring alignment cues, benefits, modifications, adjustments, and verbal assists

  • Anatomy and physiology of the physical body and subtle energy body.

  • History and philosophy of yoga, the trajectory of the practice as it is today, including both Tantric and Classical paths

  • Basic information about the specialties of restorative yoga, pre-natal yoga and chair yoga 

  • Yoga as a business 

  • Precise techniques in guiding your students with compassionate leadership skills, through your words, gestures, and heart

  • Looking at bodies and seeing the good in your students

  • Teaching methodology including detailed alignment, the power of language and demonstration, and how to use your words to enhance your student’s postures

Practice Skills
  • Name the major asana families and the poses of Surya Namaskar A, B, and C, identifying the alignment essentials and benefits of each, and describe the purpose of warm-up, standing, balancing, backbending, seated, restorative, and inversion poses, explaining how sun salutations link breath and movement.
  • Identify core pranayama techniques and the bandhas, their purpose and precautions, explaining how breath control and energetic locks influence prana and the nervous system.
  • Compare the experience of different meditation techniques, analyzing which best support focus, calm, or insight for oneself and explain how meditation and mantra repetition focus the mind, and how intention and theme shape a guided meditation.
  • Identify common kriyas and relaxation techniques, including yoga nidra and savasana, explaining their purpose and how kriyas cleanse and energize, how yoga nidra and relaxation techniques calm the body and mind, and describe appropriate precautions.
Teaching Skills
  • Develop a personal observation routine for each class phase, ensuring safety, alignment, and breath are consistently monitored.
  • Use clear, concise cues timed to the breath to guide students through poses and transitions, maintaining a steady, audible voice in class, for clarity and breath synchronization, while assessing where language could be simplified.
  • Apply safe, consent-based enhancements that support a student's alignment or comfort, respecting each student's boundaries throughout and distinguish situations that call for a hands-on adjustments from those better served by verbal cueing or props.
  • Design an original themed flow class, explaining how the theme allows a sequence to tell a story with a beginning, middle, climax, and end, describing how the theme shapes pose choice.
  • Apply pre-natal modifications and props when teaching pregnant students, offering safe alternatives that honor each student's comfort.
Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Use accurate anatomical terminology to describe the joint actions and muscle engagement in poses, applying the terms consistently in cueing.
  • Apply spinal and abdominal anatomy when cueing flexion, extension, lateral bending, and twisting, protecting the spine through core engagement.
  • Demonstrate alignment cues that protect the knees, hips, wrists, and shoulders in weight-bearing poses, distributing load safely across each joint, describing how the hips and shoulders move and bear load in asana, explaining why these joints need balanced mobility and stability.
  • Examine how different practice intensities affect breathing, heart rate, and nervous system arousal, comparing activating and calming sequences and apply knowledge of breath anatomy and the nervous system when guiding breath practices, cueing full, unforced breathing.
  • Explain the concept of the subtle body for students, integrating the major frameworks into a coherent overview that defines prana, the vayus, the koshas, the nadis, and the chakras, identifying the qualities and locations traditionally associated with each.
  • Identify the doshas of vata, pitta, and kapha, recognizing the elemental qualities and physical and mental traits associated with each, comparing practice approaches suited to each dosha, analyzing how pace, heat, and intensity affect balance.
Business Skills
  • Identify the venues for teaching yoga, such as studios, gyms, schools, corporate settings, private sessions, rented space, and online platforms, and evaluate which teaching venues fit one's goals and circumstances, justifying a career path with reference to income, schedule, and fulfillment.
  • Compare business structures for a given teaching scenario, analyzing which best balances liability protection, paperwork, and cost for that scenario.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of different marketing channels for a yoga teacher, distinguishing approaches that build lasting community from short-term promotion.
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • List and explain the yamas and niyamas with Sanskrit names and meanings, describing concrete examples in relationships, work, and self-care and assess one's own alignment with these first 2 limbs, identifying patterns that support or hinder ethical living.
  • Analyze the power dynamics of the teacher-student relationship, examining how teachers can empower students without fostering dependence, while supporting growth, and the responsibilities each party holds.
  • Assess a class environment for comfort, safety, and inclusivity, justifying changes to layout, music, or communication.
Yoga History & Theory
  • Identify the major periods of yoga's history and the vehicles or paths of yoga, recognizing the key figures who shaped modern hatha styles, while evaluating common narratives about yoga's ancient origins, and distinguishing well-supported history from myth.
  • Evaluate the relevance of the Sutras to modern practitioners, justifying how their teachings can be shared respectfully, by explain how the Sutras describe the mind and its fluctuations, and how each klesha arises and how practice and non-attachment address it.
  • Compare the dualist view of Samkhya with the non-dual view of Tantra, analyzing how each shapes the aim of practice.

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.
