Purpose

Understanding of various lineages of yoga styles; basic health conditions and ways to adapt poses; ability to use anatomy basics, vayus, chakras and doshas to create on-the-mat classes; solid grasp of yoga's history and philosophy; mantra, Dharma and Seva.

Style/Lineage

Fusion of on-the-mat adaptive Ashtanga and other Hatha techniques including breathwork, Kundalini, Qigong, Yin, Nidra and Chakra/Ayurveda based sequencing, as well as off-the-mat philosophy, culture, mantras, self-study, Yamas and Niyamas, mantras and more.

Yoga History & Theory
  • Describe how the the five vayus, seven primary chakras and three doshas may be impacted by asana and breathing techniques
  • Apply an understanding of the yamas and niyamas in your own life by discussing how they can support beneficial outcomes to a real-life challenges.
  • Describe the significance of key philosophical eras of yoga history - vedas, vedanta, sutras, tantra, hatha, and modern yoga - by describing each era's key ideas, historical context, and typical practices
Teaching Skills
  • Teach a class that supports physical equanimity through effective cuing, use of props, and adjusting (verbally, physically, and with props) students to create safe and effective alignment.
  • Teach ashtanga yoga postures by integrating the vāyus to cue breath, direction of energy, and functional action within asana practice
  • Teach kriyā by guiding intentional, breath-led actions through precise verbal cueing, appropriate timing, and the skillful use of dristhi, coordinating movement, posture, breath, and attention to support integrated, focused, and efficient yoga practice
Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Describe and compare how using different kriyas in practice shifts your energy
  • Design and teach an anatomy-based yoga class by integrating principles of functional movement, demonstrating clear joint actions and muscle engagement, and cueing movement patterns that support strength, mobility, coordination, and safe range of motion for a general population
  • Identify how opposing muscle pairs support balanced joint action and musculoskeletal integrity at the knee, hip, shoulder and spine
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Describe how you may effectively apply yoga ethics to teaching and business scenarios
  • Describe how a daily 3-minute practice of mantras - including om and mantras releated to the qualities of hanuman, ganesh, ram and sita - can support positivity, clarity and compassion
  • Explain how the principles of seva, dharma, and karma can help you to effectively navigate life choices that support your individual purpose

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.
