Core competencies

By the end of this program, graduates will be able to…

Teaching Skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to cue a single aerial yoga pose using both action-oriented and experience-oriented language, blending mechanics with sensation awareness.
  • Build a complete aerial yoga class sequence using the practicum template, including pose family selection, transitions, timing, and a clearly identified peak pose.
  • Deliver a complete aerial yoga safety talk that is reassuring, accurate, clear, and appropriately timed for the start of class, adapting tone and language for new versus returning students, while identifying signs of motion sickness, fear of inversion, silk discomfort, and uneven student readiness.
  • Demonstrate at least three hands-on assists appropriate for aerial poses, such as ankle traction, calf massage, or "rescue movements" that address unsafe or risky positions, following consent procedures and anatomical awareness.
  • Teach a complete Aerial Yoga Essentials community class using the practicum sequence template, demonstrating competency in safety communication, cueing, sequencing, and student management.
Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Explain the physiological reasons each contraindication category presents risk in aerial yoga, particularly as they relate to inversion, suspension, fabric pressure, and changes in head position.
  • Apply self-regulation language in class by consistently offering modifications, normalizing pose exits, and reinforcing that sustainable long-term practice outweighs short-term pushing.
  • Explain how inversions, suspension, breath work, and savasana each affect the autonomic nervous system, and why understanding this arc matters for class design.
Practice Skills
  • Design a Pose Family 1 class segment that builds progressively from grounded shapes toward beginner transitions, using a combination of action and description oriented cues.
  • Create a standing-behind-the-silk sequence of six to eight poses that builds from simpler standing shapes toward a peak balance pose, using a combination of action and description oriented cues.
  • Guide students through Pose Family 4 and 5 shapes with step-by-step cueing, including clear entry and exit protocols for inversions such as Monkey and/or Star poses.
  • Guide students through Pose Family 6 and 7 shapes such as Flying Downdog, with correct silk positioning, and safe entry from standing, including appropriate beginner modifications for students new to floating.
  • Guide students through hammock-mode poses with correct silk setup, student entry, body positioning, and exit, including restorative and reclining shapes appropriate for cooldown and savasana.
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Identify the ethical responsibilities of an aerial yoga teacher, including maintaining scope of practice, obtaining consent before touch, describing the teacher's role in supporting appropriate participation without diagnosing or treating.
  • Explain the dynamic load concept, the ten-to-one safety ratio standard, and why professional installation by a licensed structural engineer and rigger is required for any aerial yoga setup.
  • Apply personal self-care practices—including consistent movement outside of teaching, recovery from repeated demonstration, and structured rest between high-intensity teaching days—to sustain the physical readiness and attentional quality that aerial yoga instruction demands.
Business Skills
  • Apply skills developed across the assisting and supervised teaching phases by leading the safety talk, guiding centering, teaching short sequences, and delivering savasana in live class settings.
  • Apply professional practice standards by obtaining appropriate liability coverage before teaching, maintaining active credentials, and documenting student health intake and consent.
  • Apply professional positioning skills to create a teacher bio, a class description, and a social media presence that accurately represents the aerial yoga specialty, reflects the Earth and Aerial Yoga methodology, and meets the professional communication standards of the American Yoga Council.

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.

Program Emphasis

Evaluation methods

Program evaluations
  • Solo Project Or Presentation
  • Oral Exam
  • Written Submission
  • Direct Observation
1. WRITTEN QUIZZES: After each training session, students complete an online quiz designed to assess their integration of core concepts. These quizzes emphasize deeper understanding rather than rote memorization, with questions covering sequencing logic, appropriate warm-ups, safe transitions, pose progressions, opportunities for common mistakes, and options for modifications and advancements. 2. SELF-ASSESSMENT: Each trainee is required to complete a structured self-evaluation, based on a recording of their practice teaching. This reflective process helps them build self-awareness and teaching precision. They assess their use of voice, clarity and conciseness of cueing, application of safety and modifications, class pacing, and their ability to observe and respond to students in real time. 3. FINAL EVALUATION: Trainees complete a live teaching practicum with real students, observed by a lead trainer. The evaluation focuses on the overall flow and structure of the class, safety and confidence in instruction, appropriate use of directive verbal cues, ability to manage student needs and offer real-time modifications, and general teaching presence and leadership.
