Purpose

“Yoga is the Science of living! Yoga Teacher Training is an introduction into the wide world of yoga and gives us tools to help both ourselves and others. We learn that everything we do matters, on or off the yoga mat.”

What to expect

Yoga Postures

You will learn how to use correct alignment in your yoga postures, what to look for in concerns to safety in the poses and variations to share with beginning students. You will also learn how to transition correctly from pose to pose so your sequences have a sense of flow and purpose!

Anatomy

You will be guided through an in depth look into the human anatomy with an experienced anatomy teacher! The skills and knowledge covered in this course will become a solid platform to build confidence in your work with your body and the bodies you teach!

Breathwork

Throughout this training you will practice and learn numerous breathing techniques and concepts to deepen your practice on and off of the mat!

Yoga Philosophy

This yoga teacher training will explore the science and philosophy behind the origins of the traditional yoga practice in a way that is relatable to how we live in our modern era. Each session you will be exposed to a myriad of ideas and techniques on how to practice balance of body, mind and soul in the life we share today.

Energetics

Chakras, meditation techniques, and the subtlety of being will be a cornerstone for learning throughout this training. You will learn about the differing ways to explore subtle energy and skill within the yoga practice so you may become more aware and open to the power you hold on and off of your mat!

Teaching Skills

Whether you are looking to become a yoga teacher or just deepen your personal practice you will learn the tools and techniques behind becoming a positive leader and a teacher in the world of yoga! You will also learn tips on the business side of being a yoga teacher on how to create relationships with studios and how to explore making a living teaching yoga.

*You will be Eligible to be certified as a Registered Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance upon completion of this training.

Yoga History & Theory
  • Identify the four main periods of yoga history (pre-classical, classical, post-classical, modern) and their defining characteristics, describing each period's primary texts, figures, or practices without reference aids
  • Apply balancing techniques for the chakras including chanting, meditation, and specific asanas, selecting at least one appropriate technique per chakra with an accurate rationale for its use
  • Explain how the intellect/wisdom sheath and bliss sheath relate to meditation, intuition, and the experience of sat-cit-ananda mapping each sheath to its associated state and practice
  • Explain how raja yoga uses physical and meditative discipline to achieve perfect mind control and access the divine nature describing the mechanism and goal of raja yoga
  • Apply water and earth element practices — fluid movement and cooling breath for water; standing poses and devotional practice for earth — selecting and justifying at least one practice per element
  • Explain how om's three sounds (a-u-m) correspond to states of consciousness, and how the gunas express nature's qualities, mapping each sound and guna to its corresponding quality
  • Describe the seven chakras (muladhara, svadhishthana, manipura, anahata, vishuddha, ajna, sahasrara) by location, color, element, and associated organs, matching each attribute to the correct chakra
  • Identify the five koshas (annamaya, pranamaya, manomaya, vijnanamaya, anandamaya) their associated elements, and corresponding yoga practices, correctly pairing each kosha to its element and practice
  • Identify bhakti yoga (path of devotion) and karma yoga (path of selfless service) and the temperaments each appeals to describing both margas and their corresponding temperaments without reference aids
  • Apply element-specific practices — mantra for ether, breath work for air, dynamic movement for fire — to cultivate elemental balance
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Apply each niyama to a personal wellness routine, identifying specific practices that embody cleanliness, contentment, discipline, self-study, and surrender including at least one distinct, accurate practice for each of the five niyamas
  • Apply klesha awareness to notice attachment and aversion patterns arising during asana, interpersonal dynamics, or daily life identifying a personal example of raga or dvesa and describing how it was observed
  • Discuss the five yamas (ahimsa, satya, asteya, brahmacharya, aparigraha) their sanskrit names and their practical daily-life meanings
  • Identify dharma and artha as the first two purusharthas and define their roles within the yogic blueprint for human fulfillment accurately defining both terms and their relationship in spoken or written form without reference aids
  • Explain how kama (pleasure/desire) and moksha (liberation) complete the fourfold framework for a balanced and meaningful life accurately describing the role of each within the full purushartha system
  • Identify the five kleshas, avidya (ignorance), asmita (ego/false identity)raga (attachment), dvesa (aversion), and abhinivesah (clinging to life/fear of death) and define their sanskrit meaningsdescribing their relationship to the practice of yoga
Teaching Skills
  • Apply course concepts (philosophy, history, ethics, practice) to develop a focused and personally relevant thesis topic — shown by submitting a topic proposal that accurately grounds the chosen topic in at least two distinct course domains with a clear personal rationale
  • Explain how the five yamas govern ethical interactions with others and the five niyamas govern the individual's self-relationship distinguishing the outward orientation of yamas from the inward focus of niyamas
  • Identify the five inner limbs (pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, samadhi) and describe their sequential relationship, defining each limb and techniques of practice
  • Design and deliver a thesis presentation that demonstrates synthesis of yoga history, philosophy, ethics, and personal practice accurately representing major course domains, is coherent and personally grounded, and is delivered with presence and clarity

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.
