What is the Main Focus?Yin yoga

20 hours may seem like a lot of time together, but it flies by. Our goal is to give you the tools to either safely lead a group in a yin practice, or deepen your own understanding and practice. We will learn, practice and grow throughout this training.

Core competencies

By the end of this program, graduates will be able to…

Practice Skills
  • Apply the foundational intent of yin yoga slowing the body to address the mind, when designing or delivering a class by prioritizing stillness and breath over shape and depth
  • Explain the physiological mechanisms through which yin yoga produces its benefits including the effects on connective tissue, fibroblast growth, and the nervous system
  • Identify the three principles of yin yoga (come to your edge, make stillness, hold for appropriate time) and the general timing guidelines for pose holds
  • Explain the sequencing logic that underlies a yin sequence including how poses are ordered to progressively deepen the practice and why each sequence ends with a twist
  • Explain the distinction between compression and tension in yin poses and why the same pose may feel different depending on skeletal structure describing both tissue responses and their implications for student variation
Yoga History & Theory
  • Explain how the eight limbs function as the foundational framework that gives yin yoga its philosophical depth beyond physical stretching situating yin asana within the broader eight-limb system
  • Identify the defining qualities of yin and yang as complementary opposites including their associated characteristics (dark/light, passive/active, slow/rapid, plastic/elastic)
  • Explain how yin and yang function as aspects of balance rather than moral opposites, and why most modern yoga and movement is predominantly yang in nature describing the equilibrium principle and contextualizes it within contemporary wellness culture
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Explain how each yama extends beyond its literal translation into a nuanced ethical orientation and how it applies to both daily life and the yin practice environment describing a non-literal dimension of each yama with a concrete yin-specific example
  • Apply each niyama to a personal wellness or teaching routine identifying specific practices that embody cleanliness, contentment, self-discipline, self-study, and surrender
Teaching Skills
  • Design a complete yin class plan for a specific focus (spine, hips, or general) that accurately follows all structural guidelines from the manual including appropriate opening poses, progressive depth, alternating folds/back bends, and a closing twist and savasana
  • Apply intentional breath awareness when practicing or teaching yin by consistently cueing students to breathe on purpose throughout each hold
  • Analyze how the spine-focus and hip-focus sequences differ in pose selection, body region emphasis, and the physiological outcomes they prioritize identifying the key structural and anatomical differences between the two focuses
  • Identify the key responsibilities of a yin yoga teacher including proper sequencing, timing management, breath cueing, and creating a safe and intentional class environment
  • Design a complete yin class ready for delivery including pose selection, sequencing, hold durations, breath cues, timing method, class theme, and opening/closing language

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.
