Purpose

This training equips instructors to teach personalized private yoga sessions that support each student’s physical, emotional, spiritual, and lifestyle needs. Learn assessment, customized planning, therapeutic adaptations, and practices that foster healing and transformation.

What to expect

Rather than teaching generalized group classes, students learn how to:

  • Assess individual needs and goals

  • Create customized yoga plans

  • Apply therapeutic and adaptive strategies

  • Build meaningful client relationships

  • Support holistic healing and transformation through Christ-centered yoga practices

The training also opens additional professional opportunities through private instruction, specialty offerings, and individualized wellness care.

Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Describe how the science of flexibility and fascia play key roles in the muscular system by identifying the role of fascia and how it affects movement
  • Discuss foundation of the feet by identifying common disorders, and the foot's role in proprioception, and postural support
  • Identify disorders of the musculoskeletal systems, shoulders, neck, knees, ankles and hips and implement yoga asana that might address specific to conditions exhibited
  • Describe the central, peripheral, somatic and autonomic nervous systems and how they relate and are affected by chronic pain, chronic stress, depression, anxiety, ptsd, adhd
  • Describe the anatomy and common pathologies of the cardiovascular system and analyze its role in pranayama and asana by explaining its interactions with other body systems and their influence on physiological function.
  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic and immune systems and explain how specific postures and breathing practices influence lymphatic circulation, immune function, and overall physiological health.
  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of breathing, including the functions of the nose, diaphragms, and bandhas, and explain how their coordinated application influences respiratory efficiency, cellular function, and overall health.
  • Discuss the relationship of yoga and the digestive system by describing how yoga can support digestion through movement, breathwork and meditation
  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system and evaluate how specific yoga practices, including pranayama, mindfulness, and postures, may support stress management, hormonal regulation, and considerations related to common endocrine disorders.
  • Apply yogic principles to reproductive and pelvic floor health by using yogic and ayurvedic tools to support women through pregnancy, cycle dysfunction, perimenopause, menopause
  • Explain the neuroscience of rest, analyze its impact on brain function and overall well-being, and apply evidence-informed strategies to support and enhance sleep quality.
Yoga History & Theory
  • Critically evaluate the chakra model as a conceptual framework for assessing health by analyzing its principles and discussing its application in relation to physiological systems of the body.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of subtle energy practices by applying techniques such as mudras, chanting, and meditation to support self-regulation and physiological balance.
Teaching Skills
  • Identify signs of mind–body disconnection in students by applying foundational somatic observation skills and use appropriate verbal cues and movement-based interventions to support increased body awareness and embodied learning.
  • Create a somatic practice for a student who exhibits body disconnection implement techniques in grounding, pranayama and asana and use cues that support connection
  • Adapt a private session for a member of a special population with modifications, props, chairs and/or bolster that clearly addresses their unique needs.
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Describe how the elements, doshas, and gunas relate to individual variability and explain how these frameworks can inform personalized applications of breath work, movement practices, diet, and lifestyle recommendations.
  • Explain the potential impact of yoga on eating behaviors and eating disorders by describing relevant conditions and analyzing how specific postures, breathwork, and mindfulness practices may support healthier relationships with food and self-regulation.
  • Describe ayurvedic approach to gut health by identifying seasonal and dosha eating, as well as daily rituals that are beneficial to gut health
Practice Skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform an in depth holistic intake that encompasses mind, body, energetic and spiritual systems
Business Skills
  • Explain key practical considerations for working with private clients with unique needs including yoga insurance, waivers, and tax considerations.
  • Describe legal and administrative requirements such as liability insurance, waivers, scope of practice, taxes, contracts, and professional boundaries

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.

Students will complete video-recorded presentations for grading and feedback, written examinations to assess comprehension of course materials, and case studies designed to evaluate their ability to assess clients and make appropriate recommendations.
