Purpose

Learn to teach Pilates with clarity, depth, and adaptability. This 100-hour training blends classical knowledge in the lineage of Carola Trier and evidence-based exercise science. You will learn anatomy and biomechanics, teaching methodology, trauma-informed principles, Pilates history and cultural context, and adaptation for multiple populations. You'll get real hands-on experience along the way: 6 hours of in-house group classes, two 90-minute private sessions, and extensive self-practice and student teaching. You will also be required to take 6 classes at external studios. The training concludes with written and practical exams.

What to expect

This training is for you if you:

● Want a comprehensive mat training that allows you to be adaptable to different students.

● Are interested in deepening your understanding of functional anatomy.

● Want to go beyond cookie-cutter answers, and instead engage with the complexities of human movement and anatomy.

● Are a student of Pilates interested in deepening your own practice and/or becoming a teacher.

● Are a Pilates teacher who wants to bring a new sense of creativity, presence, and embodiment into your teaching.

● Are a yoga teacher interested in expanding your offerings and bringing a new perspective to your classes.

Style/Lineage

Pilates is a low-impact, mind-body exercise system developed by Joseph Pilates inthe early 20th century to strengthen the core, improve posture, and enhanceflexibility. It focuses on precise, controlled movements, muscle engagement, andspecialized breathing, often targeting the abdominal and spinal muscles througheither mat exercises or apparatus-based training

Additional Information

Core competencies

By the end of this program, graduates will be able to…

Teaching Skills
  • Identify the core elements of a predictable, consent-based teaching environment, including advance notice before physical contact, demonstrating consent-based touch practices during a mat class, asking permission before any physical adjustment.
  • Apply invitational language when cueing a mat exercise, replacing commanding phrases with inviting alternatives throughout the cue.
  • Construct a full mat class sequence spanning warm-up, preparation, and classical work, arranging exercises to build progressively on prior movement.
Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Develop a teaching progression that builds dynamic stability rather than static holding, sequencing cues toward adaptable load-sharing alignment.
  • Assess a student's postural habits for signs of chronic forward head strain, justifying targeted alignment cues.
  • Apply breath coordination techniques that support parasympathetic activation, using controlled breathing during mat exercises.
  • Construct a mat sequence that incorporates every spinal movement pattern at least once, balancing forward, backward, rotational, and side-bending demands evenly.
Practice Skills
  • Develop a preparatory movement sequence tailored to a student's needs, selecting pre-Pilates exercises that address specific mobility gaps.
  • Practice the abdominal series with controlled core engagement, maintaining imprint and breath coordination throughout each exercise.
  • Practice the spinal articulation series with segmental control, articulating through the spine one vertebra at a time.
  • Practice the extension series with controlled back extension, engaging the posterior chain without collapsing into the lower back.
  • Practice the side-lying series with consistent lateral alignment, maintaining a stable torso throughout each variation.
  • Practice an advanced integration exercise with full-body coordination, sequencing limbs and breath to maintain control throughout.
  • Develop a brief tapping sequence to start a mat class, structuring contact points to support pre-exercise nervous system recovery.
Yoga History & Theory
  • Evaluate the accuracy of narratives crediting Joseph Pilates solely for the exercises, justifying the distinction between his invention of equipment and movements drawn from other disciplines.
  • Describe how different Pilates Elders shaped distinct lineages, explaining how each emphasized a different aspect of the original method.
  • Design a teaching cue set that reinforces all six core principles across a class, embedding each principle into specific verbal cues.
  • Develop an exercise sequence that emphasizes coordination, balance, and whole-body integration, structuring transitions that reinforce cohesive movement.
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Apply the principle of precision over intensity in a personal practice session, prioritizing controlled quality over repetition count.
  • Practice a personal nervous-system regulation routine before teaching, applying a calming technique to support steady instructor presence.
  • Justify a decision to limit choices to a manageable number during class, evaluating the balance between autonomy and cognitive overwhelm.

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.
