Additional Information

Core competencies

By the end of this program, graduates will be able to…

Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Identify the major joints and muscle groups of the body listing their locations, names, primary ranges of motion.
  • Describe the role central nervous systems in the context a yoga practice including sympathetic responses (fight, flight, freeze, fawn) and parasympathetic responses (rest and digest), and how these states influence and are influenced by yogic practices
Practice Skills
  • Apply appropriate props, modifications, and alternative yoga postures to support personal safety, accessibility, and embodied awareness within one’s own practice
  • Practice mantras such as asatoma mantra, yogasana mantra, guru mantra, and gayatri mantra using proper posture, breath tone, vocal tone, melodic phrasing, timing, and mala usage.
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Distill traditional stories of key indian archetypes (e.g., ganesha, hanuman, lakshmi, kali, shiva) by identifying their central themes—such as removing obstacles, devotion and selfless service, hardship as awakening, and abundance—and presenting these themes through class context and personal reflection.
  • Discuss the practice of yoga from a socially responsible lens describing the difference between cultural appropriation vs appreciation, defining proximity to power, distinguishing between equity vs equality
Teaching Skills
  • Plan an anatomy-focused yoga class based on individual needs by selecting postures that intentionally stretch or strengthen a specific body part, muscle group, or movement action.
  • Develop a cohesive philosophical theme into a complete yoga class by introducing a relevant story at the beginning, integrating three to four non-repetitive thematic references throughout the practice, and delivering a concise closing reflection (“savasana mic drop”) that reinforces the theme.
  • Guide a group asana practice by demonstrating postures on the opposite side of the body, using spatial landmarks within the practice space for orientation, and positioning oneself appropriately in the room to support visibility and clarity.
  • Cue asana using clear verb-to-noun language while maintaining appropriate tone and volume and avoiding filler words to support clarity, confidence, and student comprehension.

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.
