Purpose

This training is designed for enthusiastic students of yoga who desire a stronger committed practice, higher understanding of yoga and its purpose, deeper integration of yoga as way of life, and to learn the tools of great alignment based yoga classes and serve as a teacher.

What to expect

The complete 200-hour program includes a deep and progressive immersion into the primary elements of yoga for accelerated practice. This includes the fundamentals of asana and technique of practice, pranayama, meditation, anatomy, bio-mechanics, the subtle body and chakra system, yoga history, philosophy and theory, plus an exploration of the foundational text, The Yoga Sutras. Also included are 8 hours of mentoring, observations, consent based hands-on assists, assisting classes, and an opportunity to teach regular classes at Brooklyn Flow in the weekly Blooming Teachers class. To support your growth and increased practice, you will be offered a discounted monthly unlimited membership at Brooklyn Flow for the duration of the training. Julie is lead teacher and will be joined by other Brooklyn Flow teachers: Tracy Balzano, Jason Orrell, Ahmed Soliman, Lara Kohn Thompson, and Naimah Efia Shaktiyoga New York Teacher Training runs 12 weekends over the course of 6 months of in-person instruction. Also required are 4 mentor sessions; 6 hours of observing / assisting classes; 2-4 hours of at-home study per week; and an increased frequency of yoga practice.

Style/Lineage

Shaktiyoga New York is a dynamic, intelligent, and accessible method of teaching and practice with foundations in Anusara Yoga and traditional vinyasa. Classes are open to all practitioners of any experience level, and are designed to help students find their center, trust themselves, and expand their capacity.
Additional Information
Prerequisites: Minimum 2+ years regular practice. No prior teaching experience necessary, nor do you have to be “flexible”, injury free, or super athletic, but this is not a Training for a new practitioner. Required is that you are an avid, enthusiastic student with a dedicated practice, have a desire to learn and grow from an 6 month course of study, and are ready to commit fully to the group time together. The knowledge you will gain through the experience will yield strength, flexibility, and healing on all levels, and you will up level from wherever you start.

Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Identify the primary muscles of respiration the mechanics of the breath cycle, and the roles of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems
  • Apply breath anatomy knowledge to guide students in ujjayi and other pranayama techniques within a class or dedicated breath session
  • Explain how to modify class pacing, sequencing, and postures to support prenatal and postnatal students safely
  • Explain the nervous system science behind long-held supported postures and how restorative yoga differs from yin in tissue target and purpose
Business Skills
  • Examine the personal, ethical, and financial tensions involved in "entering the landscape" as a yoga teacher
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Evaluate how specific yamas and niyamas apply to teacher conduct, studio relationships, and professional ethics
  • Identify key concepts at the intersection of social justice and yoga including systemic barriers to access, cultural appropriation, and representation
Practice Skills
  • Define beginner, intermediate, and advanced yoga students and identify the instructional priorities appropriate to each level
  • Discuss specific pranayama techniques (ujjayi, nadi shodana, bhramari, etc..) and identify their physiological mechanism, traditional purpose, and place within the broader pranayama system
  • Explain the goals, neurological mechanisms and experiential qualities of seated meditation practice
Teaching Skills
  • Weave cosmological and mythological imagery into class themes, dharma talks, or asana naming
  • Incorporate sutra teachings or one of the eight limbs as a unifying theme in a complete class plan
  • Discuss the four shaktiyoga principles of asana — open, engage, align, expand — and define the concept of spanda (pulsation) as engage-and-expand
  • Design an original align + flow apex class plan with full sequence, timing notes, and thematic language and that establishe foundation, focal points, and a clear energetic centering intention
  • Apply cues and instructions purposefully and in the correct proportion when guiding students through standing, seated, and peak poses
  • Identify the key elements of effective yoga language: precision, imagery, embodied invitation, and thematic weaving
  • Design a vinyasa sequence that flows logically between pose families and integrate props creatively to support student access
  • Demonstrate hands-on adjustments for key poses using appropriate touch, clear communication, and active student consent
  • Deliver clear demonstrations at appropriate moments and scan the room during practice to observe and respond to student needs.
Yoga History & Theory
  • Explain the progressive logic of the eight limbs as a path from ethical conduct through meditative absorption
  • Identify the goddess as philosophical principle (shakti) and name key goddess archetypes: lakshmi, sarasvati, durga, and kali
  • Explain how the kosha model and chakra system offer a map of the whole person that extends beyond the physical body
  • Explain the idea of the highest purpose of yoga, identify major milestones in yoga’s historical timeline and analyze how yoga’s philosophical goals differ from purely physical fitness while describing the evolution of the tradition over time
  • Discuss the core concepts of tantra yoga including non-duality, purusha/prakriti, shiva/shakti polarity, and the tattvas, and apply non-dual and tantric language (e.g., spanda, expansion, the body as sacred) authentically within class theming and instruction
  • Discuss om and identify brahma, vishnu, and shiva within the trimurti; recall nataraja's five acts (panchakrityas).
  • Explain the cosmological symbolism of nataraja and how the trimurti represents the cycles of creation, preservation, and dissolution
  • Explain the symbolic qualities of each goddess archetype and how they map to aspects of practice, creativity, and inner life

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.

Training is completed with a written final exam, and a class evaluation. Periodic "pop quiz" moments during training too. The class evaluation is teaching a one hour class, sometimes co-taught with a fellow trainee, to an invite-only group of students. The final exam is a 10-day take home open book exam that is a combination of multiple choice, T/F, and short answer.
