Purpose

Students are astounded by the comprehensiveness of our training. Graduates complete the training with a firm foundation of knowledge and the ability to adapt their teaching to students of all levels, conditions, and abilities.

What to expect

This intense 8-month training program is designed to deeply integrate the material into each student’s daily life. With a strong emphasis on teaching techniques and methodology, trainees learn to communicate clearly and confidently while skillfully guiding beginners. The program places significant focus on anatomy and physiology, with particular attention to nervous system regulation through asana, pranayama, meditation, and personalized one-on-one connection. Students also walk away with a deeper understanding of the lineage of yoga and the historical, cultural, and philosophical influences that have shaped the practice as we know it today.

Style/Lineage

Yoga Haven’s training has a strong foundation in asana and teaching techniques based on the principles of Iyengar, Ashtanga, Kripalu, Viniyoga along with other styles/lineage of yoga. We dive deeply into the historical context of the practice and how it applies to present day experience.

Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Describe personal experiences in yoga class, teaching and how yoga is impacting your daily life with regularly journal entries showing reflection and personal insight.
Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Discuss the general roles of the sympathetic (fight/flight/freeze/fawn) and parasympathetic (rest & digest) nervous systems and describe how somatic practices such as pranayama, yoga nidra, meditation, and posture flow help to balance the cns in a yoga class
  • Describe the basic structure and function of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems including circulation of blood, oxygen delivery, gas exchange, and removal of carbon dioxide, and how theses functions relate to pranayama and asana practice
  • Describe the basic structure and function of the muscular/skeletal system by identifying bones, muscles, joints and planes of motion as related to a yoga practice.
Teaching Skills
  • Lead an all levels yoga class using language that is clear, inclusive, and trauma-sensitive
  • Demonstrate a basic grasp of sanskrit by identifying and correctly pronouncing 36 sanskrit postures, the yamas and niyamas, and the koshas
  • Apply ethical conduct, professional boundaries, and trauma-sensitive awareness in teaching, including verbal boundaries, invitational and clear language, and providing a clear explanation of three core ethical principles that promote student agency and inclusivity
  • Teach and maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment with considertion of space, timing, and students needs
  • Demonstrate the ability to ensure proper alignment and accessibility to ensure student safety by the uses of props, modifications, and verbal adjustments
  • Lead pranayama practices that support the class theme, by using simple language, appropriate pacing, and clear instructions
  • Teach a beginner class effectively, using clear lanauge, layering anatomical directions, linking cues, cuing the breath and teaching with thematic language
  • Lead a 60 minute yoga slow vinyasa class using appropriate pacing/timing, including warm ups, the 5 movements of the spine, appropriate cool down, pranayama instructions and savasana.
  • Adapt yoga for a beginner prenatal student using pose modifications, props, and other alternatives while ensuring comfort, alignment, and appropriate pacing for each trimester
Yoga History & Theory
  • Discuss the yamas and niyamas by listing their qualities and how/where to apply them in your personal practice
  • Discuss he general history of yoga from the pre-vedic era to modern times, including classical paths of yoga: karma, jnana, bhakti, and raja yoga
  • Discuss the energetic maps of yoga including the chakras, koshas, and kleshas. indicating location, key qualities, and proper sanskrit terms
Practice Skills
  • Perform basic pranayama including: dhirga swasm, interupted valoma, ujjayi, naddi suddhi, kapalabati, brahmari with good posture, breath count, and pacing/timing
  • Practice foundational yoga postures from the curriculum with good alignment, risk mitigation, and using props safely and effectively.
  • Practice basic meditation techniques such as: contemporary mindfulness practices, visualizations, yoga nidra and body scans, creating a comfortable posture, observing your breath, cultivating a sense of peacefulness, and allowing yourself the freedom to respond to sensation.
Business Skills
  • Describe small yoga business fundamentals including classes/series planning, private one-on-one instruction, marketing, insurance, payment, and online presence.

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.
