Purpose

Explore breath techniques and integrate them into your personal practice. Refine breath work techniques and receive personal guidance from a seasoned teacher in a local community of support.

What to expect

Expect a combination in person practice, clinics and lectures, community building events, as well as a livestream component and take-home assignments.

Style/Lineage

This training expands on the YogaSix approach to Pranayama from the post-classical, tantric vinyasa lineage.

Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Identify the major muscles involved in breathing and accurately name each muscle, describing its primary action as it relates to pranayama
  • Describe the components of the nervous system accurately describing the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems and how they are impacted by breath
Yoga History & Theory
  • Discuss the definition of pranayama and its meaning in the vinyasa yoga tradition explaining how breathwork serves as a bridge between physical movement and mental stillness
  • Describe 10 different pranayama techniques including ujjayi, dirga, box, nadi shodhana, simhasana, bhramari, kapalabhati, sitali, breathwalking and accurately describe their goals, purpose, and how they feel within the practitioner's own body
Practice Skills
  • Practice 10 different pranayama techniques including ujjayi, dirga, box, nadi shodhana, simhasana, bhramari, kapalabhati, sitali, breathwalking with proper methodology, consistent pacing, and an ability to maintain focus throughout the duration of the exercise
  • Demonstrate a personal pranayama practice that reflects deep understanding of breath patterns and sustained commitment to daily yogic integration through consistent, mindful application over time
  • Apply breath modifications during asana choosing the appropriate pranayama technique to match the intensity or intention of a physical yoga class
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Describe how pranayama fits into the limbs of yoga identifying its place in a holistic wellness lifestyle beyond just the physical asana
  • Analyze the personal effects of breathwork on daily life through systematic self-monitoring of stress, focus, and energy levels.

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.
