  • Explain the roles of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, by discussing their functions
  • Explain how habitual survival mechanisms affect movement and breath
  • Discuss how trauma can be stored in the body, by explain different ways in which an individual can absorb and process stimuli
  • Identify the concept of neuroception as described by Dr. Stephen Porges
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Discuss how one might reducing the stigma around mental health within a yoga teachers scope of practice
  • Explain when and why referral to a mental health professional may be appropriate
  • Explain ethical responsibilities including confidentiality, power dynamics, and consent
Practice Skills
  • Apply grounding and body-scan techniques within a trauma-informed class
  • Guide diaphragmatic and coherence breathing techniques in trauma-sensitive settings
  • Explore sequencing choices as they relate to trauma-informed core principles
  • Apply grounded, short-form meditation techniques appropriate for trauma populations
Teaching Skills
  • Lead a yoga class offering, invitational choice based language, appropriate tone and pacing, and consideration of the differences between mindfullness and trauma-informed language
  • Identify the three circuits of the polyvagal theory (ventral vagal, sympathetic, dorsal vagal)
  • Apply polyvagal principles to select calming or activating practices
  • Discuss the impact of word choice and tone on a trauma survivor's sense of safety
  • Create a personal cueing framework that embeds empowerment and autonomy
  • Explain what constitutes a trauma-sensitive physical and emotional class space
  • Apply layered invitations appropriate to a trauma-sensitive population

Yoga History & Theory
  • Identify the physiological and psychological definitions of trauma
  • Identify Stress Responses that could show up for students, describing F/F/F/F, and ways in which the body rmay react to stimuli
  • Explain how each kosha relates to the experience and integration of trauma
  • Identify and apply Dr Peter Levine's somatic experiencing principles, within a trauma informed lesson plan.
  • discuss the chakra system from a trauma-informed lens by explaining foundational concepts in accessible and non-dogmatic language, avoiding prescriptive or diagnostic interpretations, and contextualizing chakra themes in a way that supports student autonomy, inclusivity, and emotional safety within a yoga setting.

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.
