Current influences
I am mainly influenced by two main teachers who I study with, Karin Stephan (a senior teacher of Iyengar Yoga), and Kranti Kalepally (from the Viniyoga Desikachar tradition). I study mostly asana with Karin along with teaching methodology, sequencing and presence with students. With Kranti, I study pranayama, chanting, and breath-centered asana sequencing that helps me coordinate breath, mind, and body all together. My teachings reflect a mix of a mindful pace Vinyasa with alignment considerations found in Iyengar yoga, along with breath-centered practices of Viniyoga. All of my teachings are rooted within the tradition of Krishnamacharya and his influence on the teachers that have taught my teachers. I am grateful for the differing perspectives that have helped to shape my understanding and practice of yoga. In addition to the teachers I mainly study with, I have been influenced by several teachers I have taken workshops and trainings from over the years: Manasa Kanithi, Anne Curtis, and Lee Albert to name a few that have impacted me in an unforgettable way. I am constantly reading and learning about yoga history and philosophy. Over the years I have studied different translations of Tantric yoga texts, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the Yoga Sutras, and the Bhagavad Gita. I read out of curiosity to see how it will help me with my practice and my overall understanding of yoga. I am no expert in any of those texts but am a happy and humble student of those teachings. I enjoy learning from Sanskrit scholars like Georg Feurstein and Christopher Wallace (Hareesh) to help me understand the texts from their translations. I also really enjoy reading translations and commentaries from Swami Vivekananda, B.K.S. Iyengar, Desikachar, and Eknath Easwaran. I also have briefly studied with Ravi and Sheela Shankar of Yoga Nidhi and look forward to continue learning from them over time.
