The Science of Calm

The Science of Calm

Yoga for Nervous System Regulation

Who this is for

This in-person workshop is for yoga students of all levels and yoga teachers who want to better understand how yoga, breath, movement and mindful awareness can support nervous system regulation. No advanced yoga experience is required. Teachers may also use the workshop to deepen their knowledge for sequencing, cueing and class design.

Benefits

Students will gain a practical understanding of the nervous system and how yoga can support regulation, recovery and resilience. They will experience breathwork, mindful movement, grounding and relaxation techniques while learning simple tools they can use both on and off the mat. Yoga teachers will also gain ideas they can apply in their own classes.

What to expect

  • Understanding the Nervous System: Explore the basics of the autonomic nervous system, sympathetic and parasympathetic activity, the body’s stress response, and why regulation is about flexibility between activation and recovery rather than simply “relaxing.”

  • Breath, Awareness & Regulation: Learn how breathing patterns, interoception, grounding and sensory awareness can influence how we experience and respond to stress. Participants will experiment with simple techniques and notice their individual responses.

  • Nervous-System-Informed Yoga Practice: Experience a yoga sequence designed to gradually move from activation toward recovery using intentional pacing, rhythmic movement, breath awareness, slower transitions and increasingly restful postures.

  • Rest & Recovery Practices: Explore gentle floor-based postures, longer pauses, mindful breathing and guided deep relaxation to experience how stillness and recovery practices can support nervous system regulation.

  • Integration & Practical Tools: Review simple strategies participants can use in daily life, including breath, movement, orienting, grounding and rest. Yoga teachers will also discuss how these concepts can support thoughtful sequencing, cueing and class design.
