Core competencies

By the end of this program, graduates will be able to…

Teaching Skills
  • Design a complete class opening ritual adaptable to either prenatal or postnatal students, integrating space arrangement and intention-setting language into a cohesive welcome.
  • Construct a stage-adaptive sequence template, formulating default variations teachers can apply as students move from pregnancy through postpartum recovery, that adequately accommodates the range of pregnant and postpartum bodies present.
  • Develop a short sequence of prop-based techniques, formulating clear instructions suited to either a pregnant or postpartum student's needs.
  • Analyze a hypothetical student intake form, examining which disclosed conditions would require pose modification or closer monitoring at that student's stage.
Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Design a postural realignment sequence, integrating core-safe movement and alignment cues suited to the pregnant or postpartum body's compensations.
  • Analyze a hypothetical student intake form, examining which disclosed conditions would require pose modification or closer monitoring at that student's stage.
  • Analyze how hormonal shifts might explain a student's reported symptoms, examining the connection between specific hormones and physical sensations.
  • Evaluate the appropriateness of a proposed pelvic floor practice, judging whether its intensity and timing suit the student's pregnancy or postpartum stage.
  • Analyze how uterine and organ changes across the perinatal period relate to a student's reported discomfort, examining which stage-specific process may be responsible.
  • Apply comfort measures for breast tenderness and engorgement, using supportive props in class and cool compresses or gentle massage between sessions.
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Design a culturally-informed ceremony spanning birth preparation or postpartum transition, synthesizing elements from multiple traditions into a cohesive, respectful gathering.
  • Apply herbal supplement and infusion guidance appropriate to a student's stage, using tinctures and teas suited to pregnancy or extended-steep infusions suited to postpartum recovery.
  • Analyze how the sacred moon cycle framework is used to interpret fertility patterns, examining the connection it draws between lunar phases and the body.
  • Apply supportive communication techniques when a student discloses pregnancy loss, using compassionate, non-judgmental language and presence.
  • Construct a comprehensive postpartum planning guide, integrating nourishment, household help, and childcare coordination into one framework.
  • Design a ceremony tailored to an individual student's point in the perinatal journey, formulating ritual elements that reflect her specific story and needs.
Practice Skills
  • Construct a personal asana sequence, formulating pose order and modifications suited to one's own stage across pregnancy or postpartum recovery.
  • Practice breathing techniques suited to one's stage, applying steady rhythm and full breath capacity to labor-preparation or postpartum recovery breathwork.
  • Construct a personal meditation practice plan for pregnancy, formulating a sequence of techniques suited to one's own needs across trimesters.
  • Practice a stage-appropriate bandha or mudra technique, applying proper hand, breath, or pelvic-floor coordination to sustain the practice through a full session.
Yoga History & Theory
  • Construct a class theme guide grounded in the Medicine Wheel framework, formulating prompts that connect its teachings to a mother's journey.
  • Apply the chakra framework when structuring a class theme or recovery outline, using a specific chakra as the organizing focus suited to the student's stage.
  • Apply the vessel framework when discussing postpartum bandha work, using mula and uddiyana bandha activation as the entry point to these pathways.
  • Construct a class discussion guide grounded in the maiden-mother-crone philosophy, formulating prompts that connect the framework to students' lived transitions across the perinatal journey.

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.
