Yoga History & Theory
  • Identify key periods in yoga history—including the Vedic, Classical, and Modern eras—as described in American Yoga Council Level 1 curriculum.
  • Examine the relationship between personal growth practices and teaching effectiveness, identifying how self-awareness shapes the teacher-student dynamic.
  • Complete all required American Yoga Council Level 1 documentation—including practice logs, teaching hours, and competency assessments—according to program guidelines.
Teaching Skills
  • Deliver a yoga class segment using at distinct teaching modalities, adjusting approach based on real-time student feedback.
  • Assess the impact of a teacher's cueing style on student response, drawing conclusions about how language choice shapes student engagement.
  • Manage a practice teaching session by tracking time effectively, addressing student needs, and maintaining a calm and focused class atmosphere.
  • Examine a student's movement patterns to identify compensations, asymmetries, or potential injury risks that require thoughtful modification.
  • Identify foundational principles of trauma-informed yoga teaching, including choice-based language, non-touch default, and predictable class structure.
Practice Skills
  • Assess a student's alignment in a foundational pose, identifying deviations and providing constructive, safety-focused corrections.
  • Evaluate the vinyasa sequence for energetic balance, anatomical integrity, and alignment with the chosen class theme or student level.
  • Lead a group through a structured pranayama practice, using clear instruction and appropriate pacing for beginning and intermediate students.
  • Lead a meditation session appropriate for a general yoga class, providing clear guidance and modifications for students with varying experience levels.
  • Examine the relationship between fascial restrictions and movement limitations, identifying how targeted myofascial work can improve specific poses.
  • Set up and teach a restorative yoga pose, using props effectively and providing clear verbal guidance to help students find deep release.
Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics
  • Examine how individual anatomical differences affect a student's ability to achieve specific poses, distinguishing between bone structure and flexibility limitations.
  • Describe how the subtle body framework—including the Koshas and Chakras—relates to physical, emotional, and energetic wellbeing.
Lifestyle & Ethics
  • Identify key periods in yoga history—including the Vedic, Classical, and Modern eras—as described in American Yoga Council Level 1 curriculum.
  • Examine the relationship between personal growth practices and teaching effectiveness, identifying how self-awareness shapes the teacher-student dynamic.
  • Complete all required American Yoga Council Level 1 documentation—including practice logs, teaching hours, and competency assessments—according to program guidelines.
Business Skills
  • Compare the Level 1 and Level 2 American Yoga Council certification tracks, identifying how competencies build upon each other across levels.
  • Explain how a yoga teacher can build a sustainable teaching career by developing a niche, setting clear offerings, and maintaining professional standards.
  • Describe the role of service and community connection in the yogic tradition, explaining how Seva—selfless service—supports personal and collective growth.

AYC allows each school to state and evaluate the competencies each student acquires. Students rate how well the program delivered them.
