Breath of Life

Breath of Life

Breath does more than support your yoga practice, it transforms you!

Who this is for

Aerial Yoga students and teachers who wish to learn traditional yoga breathing techniques and their benefits, and learn when during an aerial yoga practice to use each technique. All of the techniques we’ll explore are appropriate for beginner/advanced-beginner students, too.

Benefits

You’ll learn a variety of traditional breathing techniques, including several that may even be new to experienced yoga practitioners and teachers. No prior experience with pranayama is necessary. The selected techniques are valuable tools to add depth, ease, and presence to an aerial yoga practice.

Bonus! You will also be able to apply the information you learn to your floor yoga practice (without hammocks).

What to expect

Traditional yoga breathing techniques will be woven into a guided aerial yoga class, pairing specific breathing methods to the different types of aerial asanas. Some breathing techniques prepare you for a posture before you move into it. Others are practiced both before and during the posture, changing not only how it feels, but how you experience it from the inside.

You’ll learn breathing techniques specifically to support:

  • Sun Salutations

  • Standing Balances & Positions

  • Inversions & Forward Bends

  • Backward Bends and Core Strengtheners

  • Twists & Relaxation Poses

All the breathing techniques will be learned and practiced within a guided aerial yoga class.

More information

This workshop was first presented in-person this summer. Here are some of the comments I heard from students the next day:

“This workshop reminded me of how important a breathing practice is.”

“After the workshop, I’ve never slept better.”

I’ve been a student of yoga since 1991. Like many people, I came to the practice for the physical benefits, and I stayed for the grounding, clarity, and quiet inner strength it helped me uncover. In 1998, I completed my vinyasa yoga teacher training at OM Yoga Center with Cyndi Lee, and was honored to join the teaching staff there soon after. I taught at OM until 2002, when I left to create something more personal, what would eventually become My Own Yoga. From the start, I’ve been drawn to teaching in smaller settings, working one-on-one or in small groups where I can offer students more direct, thoughtful support. For 25 years, I taught yoga in New York City and Brooklyn, leading private sessions in homes, studios, and well...
